NIE

The NIE (Foreigner Identification Number) is a personal, unique, and exclusive identification number assigned to foreigners who, for economic, professional, or social reasons, need to identify themselves in Spain.

The NIE is used for identification before Spanish authorities, but it does not grant the right to reside in Spain and does not prove residency in the country.
Foreigners wishing to settle permanently in Spain may require a residence permit. Citizens of the European Union must register in the Central Register of Foreigners when settling in Spain. The firm also assists with CUE registrations.

Application Process

You can apply for an NIE:
  • Directly in Spain (for example, at a police station), or
  • At the Spanish Consulate in your country of residence.

The application may be submitted personally or through an authorized representative. The physical presence of the applicant or their representative is required in all cases.

Required Documents

  1. Completed NIE application form
    • The application must state the reason why the NIE is needed (economic, professional, or social). Authorities may request evidence supporting the stated reason.
  2. Tax payment form (fee paid).
  3. Valid original passport
    • In exceptional cases, a national identity card may also be accepted.
  4. If applying through an authorized representative:
    • Power of attorney/authorization form.
    • Official copies of the applicant's identification documents.
    • In some cases, authorities may still require the applicant to appear personally at the police station for identification.

Processing Time

The NIE is issued by the Spanish National Police under the authority of Spain's immigration and border administration. The normal processing time is approximately 3–4 weeks, although delays may occur for reasons beyond the authorities' control
